5-15-2006 Doug Flutie Retires After 21 Seasons

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Doug Flutie retired Monday, ending a 21-year career in which the undersized Heisman Trophy winner threw one of college football's most famous passes and went on to play a dozen seasons in the NFL.

Flutie finishes with 14,715 passing yards and 86 touchdowns in the NFL, spending most of his time as a backup. Last season, he attempted just 10 passes and converted the league's first drop kick for an extra point since the 1941 NFL title game.

"I think Doug deserves it," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, sensing that the play would be Flutie's football finale. "He is a guy that adds a lot to this game of football, has added a lot through his great career ? running, passing and now kicking."

I'll never forget that Hail Mary he completed at the end of a game against the Miami Hurricanes to win the game when he was with Boston College.

I don't think ESPN will ever let that happen.

 for Doug... New England will always hold him in the highest regard. Very cool that he ended his career with us as well (he was a Patriot in the late 80s too). The drop kick was simply the icing on the cake.

I had a New Jersey Generals poster of him as a kid... wish I still had that :p

CFL legend.

He was nothing great in the NFL though.

Definitely showed his potential with Buffalo and early SD pre-Brees days tho. Very reliable backup, and serviceable starter if need be.

Just curious - were Flutie Flakes any good?

Yes, if you like Kelloggs Corn Flakes.

He had quite a few good games in the NFL, until defenses discovered his weakness - he couldn't throw from the pocket because he couldn't see down field as well. :) So, rather than force him to scramble from the pocket, where he excelled at running for his life, they learned to keep him in there and beat him that way.
