Well the only way to get surround sound out of a PS3 is digitally, right? (optical/toslink or HDMI)

Most of the cheap surround headphones only have multiple analog connections that are intended for use with a soundcard that outputs multichannel analog.

I definitely have not been keeping up with the progress of surround headphones, but if you're really after that "more than stereo" sound from headphones, three viable options come to my mind

-Get one of the sets that has a digital input (likely digital optical / toslink) with a DD / DTS decoder that will give you the multichannel analog output that you need
-Get some sort of unit that takes a digital input and has the ability to give you a "surround effect" from stereo headphones... like dolby headphone. I did a little google search and found this one for example http://www.audiocubes.com/prod...Headphone_Adapter.html
-Get a receiver / pre-pro / whatever for your home theater that has dolby headphone built into it and plug in stereo headphones to that (I think Marantz and HK are a couple companies that have dolby headphone... other companies probably have a generic surround headphone effect that might work as well)

HeadFi is a really good place to get headphone information (watch your wallet though). Searches I have made in the past for "5.1 headphones" have resulted in some very negative threads over there. Last time I looked, the general consensus was that surround headphones were not a good idea if you're looking for sound quality. At least when a computer was concerned, the recommendation seemed to be to get a soundcard like the X-Fi that has an excellent "surround effect" for stereo headphones (similar to the goal of dolby headphone). I have dolby headphone on my pre-pro that I've tried a few times with different sources. It definitely sounds different and I can tell that it's doing what it's supposed to be doing... but it just doesn't seem natural to me. If I were you, I'd try to go out and demo the dolby headphone feature and some surround headphones before deciding to spend the money on it.

good advise.. ive a couple of dolby headphones, and the sound is fantastic. i could never go back to standard stereo headphones again for movies/gaming, which have just vague left and right channels

the link and unit yoyo provided is supposed to be quite good, but you want the japan victor version, as you can you use an ac adapter with it

Do you know how much the Japanese version costs?

I'm wondering if it would be a good decision to just get a receiver that can do dolby headphone and have a much more versatile product?

Just for example, this $299 refurb marantz mentioned in this thread does dolby headphone as well as being an overall solid unit for features

That would help if more than one source is involved, but only PS3 was mentioned, eh?

yeah roughly the same as the us one

the us version runs on batteries only and drains them in a few hours

you guys know this ???

www.psykoaudio.com/

ive not heard of them myself, sorry

your best bet might be the little jvc unit which im told, with decent standard headphones, emulates surround sound quite well

all the best
