what brand is your soundcard?

if its creative, go to startbar>programs>creative>soundblaster XXX>surround mixer

Click on the little icon that says "2 speakers", change it to 5.1, and click test...if all goes well you'll hear "left channel, right channel, rear left, rear right, center channel"

The Disney DVDs (Toy Story, Monsters Inc., etc.) and some others with THX have the channel test. It also lets you check if your speakers are in phase.

Ah, you took the highly technical method, good job :p

(actually, I think that can be harmful to the amp)
