5.1 or 7.1 Speaker Layout... Where do you place your speakers in your room!? Especially the two back ones... I can not mount mine on the wall anymore so any ideas? ;-)

Sp1------------Sp2--------------Sp3
Subwoofer

Sp4---------------------------SP5

Sp1, 2, and 3 are mounted high on bookcases. The subwoofer is on the floor in the upper left corner. Sp4 and Sp5 are on floor stands in the back corners of the room. This is 5.1 Dolby .

For 5.1, I believe the left and right front speakers are supposed to be approximately 30 degrees off of the center speaker axis.

Left and right surrounds should be "high and to the sides" rather than "low and to the rear."

The subwoofer placement varies based on room construction. For most bass output it should be places along the wall that is most continuous(no doors or windows vents...).

The subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room since it's frequencies are so low that it will sound the same where ever you put it.

Using the Logitech Z-560s of 5500s, if I cannot place the speakers on the wall, then I hang them from the ceiling. The way they are balanced
when you turn the base, they point downward...so it is just a matter of placing them in the right spot. Try a pair of cuphooks per speaker.

Not quite right... it's not that the sub will sound the same, rather it's that the audio is fairly non-directional... meaning that it's hard for a person to pinpoint the exact location of the sub. The placement of the sub can have an effect on how it sounds... hence, for example, the term "corner loading".

I think I read somewhere that corner loading of the sub is recommended because it will excite room resonances more evenly than other placements.

It is empiric (trust your ears), but a corner without any opening nearby is probably a good place to start.

All audio waves are directional. It's that the audio waves are of such a low frequency the human ear can't tell the difference.

Fairly-non-directional, lol........
