5.1 only works with some programs, but not others...

I've got a set of Logitech Z-5300s and I've noticed that 5.1 doesn't work in Windows Media Player 10, Half-Life 2, but will work in WinDVD.

In HL2 I do get sound from all 5 speakers, but when a sound is directed at a particular satellite it plays through all channels.

The NVMixer indicates my system is set up in 5.1, as does Windows speaker settings.

Can anyone shed any light on what's wrong?

It is, I've done it before...

To the OP, how are the speakers connected? And I assume you're on an nForce2 motherboard with SoundStorm?

Yes, EPoX 8RDA+ with SoundStorm. Speakers are connected directly to the mobo in the correct fashion. 5.1 works in other programs, just not in WMP10. Am I missing a decoder/codec?

If WMP is a music player than I know what the problem is.

True stereo is 2 speaker. Some soundcards have an option that allows you to clone the music to the rear channels, but for my ears music sounds best coming at me in 2.1.
