5.1 and 7.1 windows xp speaker issues

i have a 5.1 speaker setup and have set that in the speaker sound section in the control panel, yet, each time that i close that out and then open it back up, it defaults to 7.1. How can i get it to think that i have a 5.1 instead of a 7.1 speaker setup?

intel bad axe 2 motherboard for what its worth
If i tell Intel audio studio its 5.1 it remembers it there.
