Superbowl Sunday turned into a super scare for a Dover, Ohio family.

Their 4-year-old son became trapped inside their washing machine.

At first Jennifer Hasseman says she thought little Donivan was just playing, "My oldest son came up to me and said 'Mom Donivan's head is stuck in the washer'."

Jennifer and her husband tried to free Donivan using a crow bar, but she says, "his one leg was bent and his back was compressed against the agitator."

They called 911 and the Dover Fire Department and Rescue responded.

Cpt. Brooks Ross says at first they were nervous about the situation, "It was such a confined space we had to make sure the tools we were using didn't end up causing him injury and making it worse."

Rescuers carefully used the jaws of life to slowly dismantle the machine and free Donivan.

He was checked out at a local medical center and sent home healthy and happy.

On Monday firefighters took Donivan for a ride in a fire truck and gave him a teddy bear.

"A medic told Donivan he had to name the bear." said Jennifer, "I suggested 'Washer' but the medic said 'Agitator' and Donivan said fine so his name is 'Agitator'."

Jennifer says she is eternally grateful to Dover Fire and Rescue.

Firefighters say they respond to many tragic calls and they're just happy Donivan's back to playing like a regular child.

I like the "'Mom Donivan's head is stuck in the washer'."

I would have loved to have been in on that conversation of how his head got in the washer.

OK, so they rewared a 4 year old for this bahavior. He's 4, yeah, he learned a lesson here. Bet he does something like this again in the near future.

Yeah, I'm sure a teddy bear and a ride in a fire truck was worth the unpleasant experience of having his head stuck in a washer for what sounds like a long time.

what he is saying is it promotes a repeat of the same behavior that got him to crawl into a washing machine in the first place.

What I'm saying is the trauma of the first experience is enough to discourage him from doing that.

I'm gonna have to agree with mugs here. The trauma will be enough, and even a 4 year old should understand the 'rewards' were really just helping hands to help cope with what just happened. To a 4 year old, getting stuck for what sounds like was a decent amount of time, was probably terrifying. When I was young, I got myself into trouble like this before, and when it was something that was especially traumatic (for a youngin), I was treated 'well', but only for coping matters.

i agree with mugs on this one. the ride in the fire truck wasn't a reward for his behavior but salve for his trauma.
