4x512MB or 2x1GB

In general, which is the best configuration for 2GB DDR2 ram? To use two 1GB sticks or use four 512MB sticks. The reason for asking is that I don't quite know how how DDR2 works, and I thought that using four sticks instead of two would enable each stick to be addressed separately and perhaps give a lower delay. Also I thought that using smaller sticks might give better performance since the small memories are usually faster (at least initially) than the larger ones, so low CL for two 512-sticks might be cheaper than a comparable 1GB-stick.

What does the experts say?

2 sticks is better for overclocking and for general use.

And as an added bonus with 2 sticks, the risk of one of them being defective is much smaller.
