As RAM prices drop, I'm thinking that more people are going to 8GB, so I thought I'd ask for advice based on my experience. I've tried going to 8GB, with little success. I bought a pair of 2GB Corsair XMS2 6400 DHX sticks to go with two identical sticks I already had. This is on an ASUS P5E x38 board. After multiple attempts to POST with relaxed timings, recommended voltage (2.1), and reduced frequencies (667), I've given up. I talked to Corsair tech support, and they suggested increasing the Northbridge voltage 0.1 or 0.2 volts. Tried it, didn't work. Most I could get was 3 sticks to work with increased NB voltage, never got four to POST. Note that each stick will POST easily on its own or in pairs.
Corsair admitted that the 4x2GB configuration has been a major issue for Corsair and motherboard manufacturers this year. I haven't yet tested with Memtest, but I'm thinking this isn't a problem with the memory itself. I'm open to being convinced that bad ram is causing the problem, though. Seems strange that the sticks would work in pairs but not as two pairs.
Am I the only one with this problem? Admittedly, I don't need more than 4GB for my current applications, so this is more of a novelty item for me.
Thanks in advance!
