4x DVD+RW Drive problems

Hello all,

I have a Dell Latitude D600 with an NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A drive. (firmware version 10AC)

Using 4x HP Blanks I can burn data dvds just fine at 4x.

I bought some 4x blanks to try out, however they dont have a brand associated with them. They are marked as 4x DVD+R on the inner circumference of the dvd though.

When I try burning data to these dvds, Roxio only allows me to select the 2.4x speed for burning.

Has anyone encountered such an error before? I don't have another dvd burner to try the blanks in, but I was thinking since the HP 4x blanks worked fine, these should also without having to do a firmware update? In any case Dell nor NEC has firmware updates for the burner, only some people who have personally written their own, which I am very hesitant to use, thus my inquiries here.

Thanks for any help at all.

Some of the cheap, generic brands don't always burn at the advertised speed. I've gotten some cheap-O 2x media that would only burn at 1x in my Liteon burner using Nero.

Well I got an e-mail reply from the supplier today (whom I purchased the item from wholesale) saying that the DVDs were bought off a highly reputable dealer from the US and they have never been misled before by false advertising.

He's going to send the dealer a copy of my complaint to see if any solution can be addressed.

As far as the firmware goes, neither Dell nor NEC has firmware updates for this device. The only updates i've come across are those made by individuals who have done all sorts of things such as making this +RW burner compatible to a -RW as well.

I would much rather prefer to use a firmware upgrade from Dell or NEC only.

I guess Blue Weasel raises a good point there with the cheap generic brands. As soon as I get confirmation on the suspected problem I will let you all know.

Thanks for the replies!
