4X DVD burning takes 30mins - 1hr?

ok i read and heard numerous sources say that burning at 4X should take roughly 15 mins. on my system, it's taking double that. i've confirm this by using dvdxcopy at 4x and nero at 4x. the media i used are dvd-r rated at 4x. i dont think my system specs are too low either. here's my setup:

WinXP Pro w/ SP1
AMD XP 1700+ @ 2ghz
Gigabyte N400-L1 nForce2 MB
512MB PC2100 DDR
Sony 4x DVD+/-R burner
Liteon 48x cd-r/dvd combo
80g WD HD
120g Maxtor HD
40g WD HD

Onboard IDE Primary Master: 80g WD HD
Onboard IDE Primary Slave: None

Onboard IDE Secondary Master: Sony DVD burner
Onboard IDE Secondary Slave: Liteon cd-r burner

Promise IDE Controller Primary Master: 120g HD
Promise IDE Controller Primary Slave: None

Promise IDE Controller Secondary Master: 40g WD
Promise IDE Controller Secondary Slave: None

I have all master/slave jumpers set up correctly but is there a better way to connect my ide drives? I havent messed with the combinations but i initially had the optical drives on the Promise card but my system keep freezing. Seems to be fine with the current setup.

you're using 4x dvd-r.. but rated for what drives? I've seen some that are 4x for most drives, but the sony's will only take 2x. what media are you using specifically?

and are you simulating at all?

The actual burn takes appx 15 mins but if you are verifying Data, opening and closing then it'll take Longer

i cant remember the exact name of the media but they're made by pioneer. i know it's burning at 4x because it says so during the burn process in both dvdxcopy and nero. i do leave the computer alone while it burns with minimal programs running in the background. and i dont have "verify data" on either.

Is your sony drive using DMA? If not then that is the problem, it is engaging Burn-proof every few minutes because Data can't be feed to the drive fast enough. This would cause exactly what you are experiencing.
