my parents want to buy a 4wheel drive car.

they hate the way their current car (2008? altima 2.5) handles in snow. i told them just buy snow tires.

no, they want to trade in the altima for a 4wheel drive car.
since it's been a mild 2011 winter, they expect blizzards for winter of 2012. SIGH...
They live in NYC.

so whats a good (new or used) 4wheel drive car/suv with good gas milage?
price range = $20-25k

Subaru Legacy w/ CVT is low-mid 30's highway, same for the Outback, Mazda CX-5, Impreza, etc. But yes, chances are some good snow tires would do the trick.

Yea i was going to say subies non-turbos now make average MPG given their AWD systems.

CX-5 is right at the low $20k, with that skyactive engine and AWD.

The cheapest option is to throw blizzacks on. If that 2.5 gets decent mileage VS the new subies.

Any of the newer Subarus with CVT: Outback (22/29), Legacy (23/31), Impreza (27/36), XV Crosstrek (25/33).

I am waiting for this later in the summer:

Impreza would probably be the obvious choice. The new one has the good AWD that you'd expect in a Subie and it gets 36 mpg on the highway.

As an Outback owner, I highly recommend it. I have the 3.6R, so I see more like 24 MPG in winter (combined, with winter blend fuel) and 27 or so in the warmer months.

A friend has a Legacy, which is nice if you want a mid-size sedan but not a crossover. If not, the Impreza is a little smaller and gets even better mileage.

If AWD is at the top of your requirements, Subaru is the way to go, as all systems are not created equal. Check out Youtube for comparison vids.
