4WD Newbie Conquers Beach! Not only did I not get stuck...

...but I did doughnuts, jumped over some dunes (ok, FINE...they were small little hills, about 2 feet high...

happy? 😉) and generally had a damn blast! Woohoo! I don't know why I didn't get a truck sooner. Just dumb, maybe?

My GF and I just got back from our Padre Island TX trip. We were down on JP Luby beach/Mustang Island for those of you who know the area. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of going down to the Corpus Christi/Padre Island TX beach areas, YES; you can drive your vehicle on the beach. Hell, you can drive it straight into the water if it so pleases you! 😀 This is a far cry from the beaches in NY (Jones/Coney Island/Orchard/Hamptons) where I grew up where you drive to the beach, park in a parking lot and WALK about a mile to the sand. No vehicles allowed. BOOOOOOOOO!

We were busy doing other stuff (dining at local restaurants/go-karts/putt-putt golf/clubbing/etc) so I only got about an hour on the beach before it got dark. But, that was enough time to have a drinky (just one...hadda drive back, you know!) and do some four-wheelin'! Wee-haa!!!! <--Redneck sound

I put it in 4-HI as soon as we hit the sand. It was pretty loose, about 6-8 inches deep, I'd guess. The EXACT SAME SH!T I got the Accord stuck in last year. And I mean, WAAAAY stuck, like so stuck that I couldn't open the door and had to climb out the damn window, stuck. That be stuck.

Anyway, back to my little Amuse the Newbie Story...the sun was setting and the beach was empty. I started off in 4-HI, doing about 10-15MPH. Just kinda sliding around sideways and stuff. Just for grins, I drove into a fairly deep (12-inches plus) area full of loose sand and slammed on the brakes. OK, I stopped. Then, I hit the pedal about halfway down. Sand everywhere and the truck just shot out of there! What a rush....

So, after about another 15 minutes of slamming my girlfriend into the door with the abrupt direction changes (don't worry, she was having more fun than I was!) I came to the realization that this 4-wheel drive thing rocks the house! Just so I could say "yeah, I did it", I stopped and shifted the transfer case into 4-LO, and had at it. I'm not sure, but I think in 4-LO the tranny stays in first gear only. I was in "Drive" but it sure sounded like it stayed in first. What a blast. In 4-LO, the sand REALLY went flying all over the place. Glad I had the windows closed. I had the AC on, and Judas Priest "Living after Midnight" (greatest hits, live and studio) blasting away. It was sooooo cool!

I have to say, I was prepared for the worst, though. I not only had the cell phone, I had a 15-foot nylon tow strap w/the hooks on the ends, a 12-volt compressor and a first aid kit in the truck. 🙂 Happy to report that I needed none of those.

What big fun that was. Thanks to all who humored me by reading this far and who lent their advice in my thread a few weeks ago, same subject. 🙂

Isn't it great! I love my truck. You will have more fun than that, try going to a 4x4 get together for some mud whompin' 🙂

Oh, and 4low is not only first, it just gets all the way to 4th gear by about 30 mph, and shifts really fast. What kind of truck? And take some pics next time!

Hey, Evadman, what's up? 🙂 It's a 2001 Isuzu Trooper, 4WD. Yeah, I know...no pics. 🙁 I was having so much damn fun, I forgot to put the GF to work taking pics. Next time, though 🙂

Well, if memory serves me correctly, I think when I had it in 4-LO, I just gunned it to see how much sand I could kick up. 🙂 I was doing doughnuts at first, when it was in 4-hi. I just had a darn blast. Simply will be doing that again soon.

NOTE:

For the tree huggers out there; no endangered species were harmed during this fun-fest. I don't even think I ran over any lifeforms at all. Well, except for that one small rabbit that just couldn't quite make it out of the sand and into the brush. 😉 j/k

I'm not exactly sure on the mechanics of the Isuzu 4wd system so I could be wrong, but generaly with any 4wd system doing donuts while 4wd is engaged is not the greatest idea 😉

Hey man! I know the feeling! When I got married 5 years ago, we went to Padre Island for our honeymoon! We rented a 4WD Suzuki Sport, took it out on the beach about 5 times... It was great! We tried it in 2wd at first, and got stuck! I hopped out, locked the hubs and put it in 4LO and it just pulled right out of there... We drove down in the water up to about 1 foot deep too, pretty cool with the spray going everywhere...

It is a blast!

<< Forget the beach, go to roads around here classified as Level B Roads which are dirt roads. >>

I really want to do that but [wussfactor] the truck is new, expensive (for me) and I really don't want to fling baseball-sized rocks against the body yet[/wussfactor]

I bought the latest issue of Petersen's 4Wheel OffRoad, just for grins. Those guys are completely insane! :Q Those trucks are obviously "toys" and they don't care if they roll them down a 400-foot hill of boulders...which they do! :Q Looks like huge fun though.

Yep. Padre Island is a really fun place. The nightlife is pretty decent too, although it was quiet this past weekend. Easter, and all that.
