...but I did doughnuts, jumped over some dunes (ok, FINE...they were small little hills, about 2 feet high...
happy? 😉) and generally had a damn blast! Woohoo! I don't know why I didn't get a truck sooner. Just dumb, maybe?
My GF and I just got back from our Padre Island TX trip. We were down on JP Luby beach/Mustang Island for those of you who know the area. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of going down to the Corpus Christi/Padre Island TX beach areas, YES; you can drive your vehicle on the beach. Hell, you can drive it straight into the water if it so pleases you! 😀 This is a far cry from the beaches in NY (Jones/Coney Island/Orchard/Hamptons) where I grew up where you drive to the beach, park in a parking lot and WALK about a mile to the sand. No vehicles allowed. BOOOOOOOOO!
We were busy doing other stuff (dining at local restaurants/go-karts/putt-putt golf/clubbing/etc) so I only got about an hour on the beach before it got dark. But, that was enough time to have a drinky (just one...hadda drive back, you know!) and do some four-wheelin'! Wee-haa!!!! <--Redneck sound
I put it in 4-HI as soon as we hit the sand. It was pretty loose, about 6-8 inches deep, I'd guess. The EXACT SAME SH!T I got the Accord stuck in last year. And I mean, WAAAAY stuck, like so stuck that I couldn't open the door and had to climb out the damn window, stuck. That be stuck.
Anyway, back to my little Amuse the Newbie Story...the sun was setting and the beach was empty. I started off in 4-HI, doing about 10-15MPH. Just kinda sliding around sideways and stuff. Just for grins, I drove into a fairly deep (12-inches plus) area full of loose sand and slammed on the brakes. OK, I stopped. Then, I hit the pedal about halfway down. Sand everywhere and the truck just shot out of there! What a rush....
So, after about another 15 minutes of slamming my girlfriend into the door with the abrupt direction changes (don't worry, she was having more fun than I was!) I came to the realization that this 4-wheel drive thing rocks the house! Just so I could say "yeah, I did it", I stopped and shifted the transfer case into 4-LO, and had at it. I'm not sure, but I think in 4-LO the tranny stays in first gear only. I was in "Drive" but it sure sounded like it stayed in first. What a blast. In 4-LO, the sand REALLY went flying all over the place. Glad I had the windows closed. I had the AC on, and Judas Priest "Living after Midnight" (greatest hits, live and studio) blasting away. It was sooooo cool!
I have to say, I was prepared for the worst, though. I not only had the cell phone, I had a 15-foot nylon tow strap w/the hooks on the ends, a 12-volt compressor and a first aid kit in the truck. 🙂 Happy to report that I needed none of those.
What big fun that was. Thanks to all who humored me by reading this far and who lent their advice in my thread a few weeks ago, same subject. 🙂
