I'm doing this strictly on weekends because I'm not ready to drop my real job for this. A web dev company I used to work for is recommending me to their clients for product photography, a field I am really interested in and invested lots of practice time in. I hope my rates make some kind of sense, but this is what I charge. I tell them it can either be by product or by time. By product I charge $15/per shot with a minimum of $250. Meaning if I come to take 1 shot it's still $250. By time, my day rate (4-8 hours) is $900, my half day rate (from 1 minute up to four hours) is $450. As of yet I haven't charged more for normal PP, but that will probably change. Makes sense?

Assuming all you mean by 'normal PP' is basic color correction, that makes sense.

It seems very low on the per-shot rate and per-shot minimum. How does that compare to other local photographers?

I have no idea what other area photographers charge, I'm just charging based on what makes sense to me and from what I've read online. The per shot seems low, but it's only used for 15 or less products. 15 x $15 is already $225, so I assume that someone with ~100 products (which I have this weekend) will use the per day charge instead of paying $1500. For less than 15 products I think it's not too bad. I guess I can go up to $20+ if it gets abused.

I guess it depends on the type of product and how much staging is required. There's obviously a huge difference between a beer bottle staged in an ice chest complete with sweat and a super-basic, well-lit product-on-white.

Let us know how it turns out!

Are you charging for usage? Incidentals? Processing? It's something you should seriously consider.

Personally I don't like the charge per product concept. Much simpler to just stick with half day or full day rate.
