4th of July celebrations

It seems like a warzone here southside of Berkeley, California. Explosion after explosion from all over. M1's, cherry bombs, fire crackers, who knows, maybe guns. It's finally letting up now at 11:23PM. But I figure it's far from over. I don't remember it being this intense and chaotic. Is it the pandemic?

Maybe...we lived in the Modesto area for 25 years...itusually went till after 0200 over there.

Things quieted down quite a bit here when the tide came in just before 10 pm. The ocean beach is the only place where fireworks are legal here...and when the tide comes in...the beach gets VERY small...and the sand up high on the beach isn't very drivable...even in 4x4's. It's deep...and very soft.
However...some diehards managed to stay dry...and things started up again about midnight...but quieted back down after 1 am.
Apparently there were a few dune grass fires started by the idiots...and one of the large dumpsters the city brought in for trash caught fire. In all...a fairly quiet 4th.

I don't know the laws regarding fireworks here but I doubt that the cherry bombs, firecrackers, etc. are legal. I doubt that even "Safe and Sane" fireworks are legal here. They are in select Bay Area cities, but the map they showed on TV the other day didn't include Berkeley. AFAIK, they are NOT legal.

Last night the blasts didn't stop until after midnight, but they thinned out after 11PM a fair amount. I really had the impression that this was a lot more intense than previous. No data, just feels. It was LOUD! Many blasts sounded like bombs. I figure somebody not far from me, within a block or so, spent a lot of money. I mean, 500-1000 blasts like that must cost.

I'm under the assumption that since the celebrations were for the most part canceled last year people wanted to make up for it.
Sounded like there were large(for around here) displays put on here both Saturday & Sunday nights along with the usual backyard parties setting them off.

Here, the forecast was for cloud cover, so people who had hopes of seeing FW displays put on by municipalities, etc. were disappointed. Could account for some of the bang BANGing, but the perps were prepared. I always wonder where they get the pyro. There's plenty of illegal stuff, I have seen stories every day of busts and massive explosions around here.

It's not hard to get fireworks. Go to any indian reservation and there are no restrictions.

When I lived in the bay area, despite fireworks being 90% banned, there was never any shortage of people blocking intersections and blowing off full scale aerials. Was always fun to be on the roofline and watch across the entirety of SF.

I was hoping our city would ban all fireworks but they reported they issued 75, $2000 citations. That is an easy $150,000 over a couple of days. No way they will give up easy money like that. It was not like they didn't warn people. They had electronic billboards at all the major intersections. They put the warnings in all city communications like email and social media. It was in all the local papers, even the free one they give to every resident. It was even in our city trash/water bills.

Here's my puppy in her safe space (guest bathroom downstairs - I will put her puppy bed when she goes in there)...she spent the night there (things finally calmed down after 1AM here)...

I have 5 cats and I don't think I will ever be able to go out and leave them on a July 4th again. We even gave them calming treats to ease their anxiety but they were still were really scared. I had to crank up a youtube video with calming music and sit with them all night.

It's funny how different some animals react to fireworks. We have 3 dogs and a cat and only one dog gets anxious about fireworks (and other loud things like thunder). And even then he's not bad, he just gets more cuddly than usual.
