Basically any external drive is only good for cold storage (archiving) or occasional storage at best. They just get too hot for heavy use. Even copying a batch of files to them in one block could cause the temps to become unreasonably high in 20 minutes.

I use drives like this in rotation for server backups (MTWThF) where differential data is only a few hundred MB's daily. They're totally adequate for that.

You would think that the drive mfg's would think a little, and put at the very least, some ventilation holes in the plastic drive casing. Poor little HDDs, encased in their little thermal tomb.

Seems like it would be ideal for storage of modest sized rarely accessed type stuff, or partial backups for all the systems in an office.

Not with Seagates, they bork the firmware so it only works in their enclosures. I don't know about WD. At the very least, it voids your warranty.

That's not true, I have 3 external 3TB seagates I've been using for 1-2 years in my PC. I never even turned them on in the enclosures. It is very well known you can do this (even Techbargain mentions it every time one is on sale).

I too just got done doing it to some new 3TB and 4TB Seagate externals I purchased towards the end of last year.

This is nice deal, definitely. Hoping HDD makers migrate more of their drives to 2.5 options for lower-power. The best passive external HDD I can find is a 2TB, and it's 2x this price. :/

Grabbed a few 1.5TB WDs a number of years back from clearance-out WD mybooks at Target. At the time, they were dirt cheap and the drives still work today. :)
