4TB Seagate 5900RPM 64MB cache SATA6G HDD $189.99 FS @ Newegg

Seagate has been awful for me lately. I've had to RMA the same drive 4 times in the past year. There are only 4 reviews and they look a bit fishy.

I bought a Seagate STBD4000400 4TB when they were $195 shipped. I have 168 hrs on it (7 full days) and it has been running very cool and quiet. While I'm not a Seabait fan, I couldn't pass on the price and 1tb platters.

Considering 3TB drives were going for $90 around Thanksgiving last year, not even close.
Prices in the past aren't really helpful to somebody who needs a drive today. There's also ALWAYS a premium on the higher capacity drives. A 4 drive bay can't hold more than...4 drives!

The current best prices on 3tb are around $110 I think, or about $37/tb. The best deals on 4tb is around $150, or $37/tb. Both prices are at buydig with their v.me $20 rebate but, both are external drives. Cracking the case will give you a 4tb internal drive, but the warranty coverage is questionable.

Marketing Manager for Seagate’s Barracuda family- Dave Burks said

“The new 1TB/disk Barracuda drives have a nearly identical power-consumption as Barracuda Green, but deliver much higher performance. We changed Barracuda LP to Barracuda Green to make it easier for our customers and partners, and it did. Now with the strides we have made with areal density, power, and performance, the value proposition for “green” drives just isn’t there anymore. If you consider the annual power savings for a “green” drive over a 7200 RPM desktop drive like Barracuda it was next to nothing. We’re talking a matter of 40 cents per year”

What happened? Why are you now making new 1TB/platter drives operating at only 5900rpm? Is this because of reliability issues I wonder? Hmmm

Hm, what happened to newegg reviews? When this thread was created there were 4 reviews on newegg, now there are none...

Good to see prices inching down, at this rate by the end of the year they just might come down to preflood/preconsolidation level... Although sadly consolidation is here to stay...
