Nice warranty, but why not use 4TB platters? Are they that new that they couldnt reliably be used?

You mean 1TB platters. Yes, I would expect the latest, most dense storage technology to be less reliable than one that's been in production for a while.

using 4 platters vs 5 is not that big of a deal in terms of design. Biggest issue I suspect is that the 1TB is only reliable at the slower 5400rpm speeds and the electronics are not fast enough to support (reliably) the same density at 7200rpm.

Wow, that's a lot of storage! I find it easier to just use a server with multiple hard drives, and expand over time (the magic of drive extender), but I'm cheap.

I've been waiting for something like this to hit the market for a while now too.

Although it does seem outrageously expensive. Given 8x SATA ports and a larger case, I really do think I'd rather go with 4x 1TB drives over 1x 4TB drive, if it will cost about the same (actually a bit cheaper, at only $436 .. 4 drives X $109 each wd black 1tb)

Still waiting for the prices on the 3TB to drop a bit (to add to, and eventually replace, the 1.5TB drives in my Synology RAID server...).

Having a 4TB come out is a good sign for this....

Its the same reason as RAID used to mean Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks.

If 5x800 Gb platters costs less than 4x1000 Gb platters than WD is going to make them using 800 Gb. platters.

Yes, but a larger case may cost more, as will a motherboard with extra SATA ports (or an add-on SATA card) and a PSU that can support the extra power draw (albeit not much). Also, the extra noise, extra heat output, extra bulk of the system taking up space...

Noone needs a 4TB hard-drive. Shit, I still use my old WD 320GB hard-drive and I can't fill it either!
