First off, I have to confess that I have zero knowledge of firewire.

Now the part that has me scrathing my head. I just bought a new camcorder (JVC GR-D270). I'm still reading the manual, but for trandferring video to the PC via firewire it says "When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC VC-VDV206U or VC-VDV204U DV cable depending on the type of DV connector."

So, I need a firewire card. And I also need to get a cable. But how do I know if it's 4 pin or 6 pin? This card doesn't say which cable to get.

Or am I completely misunderstanding this?

The card has 6-pin connectors, try looking at your camcorder - if the connector is the same size, it's 6 pin - if it's smaller, it's 4-pin. Then you can base your cable purchase on the hardware you have... I was a n00b when I did this exact same thing 6 months ago. :)

In nearly all cases, a camcorder is 4-pin, & the computer input will be 6-pin.

Simply buy a cable with both tips (they are easy to find at local stores @ outrageous markups), or order online.

Ok....I think. :) I guess what has me confused is that the choice of pins (4 or 6) isn't for the camcorder side of the cable...that's 4. The 4/6 thing is for the PC side of the cable, and I don't have a card yet (so I can't simply count the contacts), nor does the Belkin link say anything about 4 or 6. Is there a standerd or something? I guess I'm just wondering, if I didn't know to ask you guys, how would I know whether to get 4 or 6 pin connector (for the PC side)? Other than to run down to the store and physically look at the card. ;)
