I recently bought a used HP Laserjet 4MV printer. It has the Jetdirect J2556B 10/100 Mbps network card in it (Firmware Revision A.05.35). The printer works fine with the parallel port, but I want to set it up to use the network interface because I send large CAD files fairly regularly. I have been unsuccessful in setting up the card.

I have tried to use HP Web Jetadmin - it seems to find the printer no problem on IP 192.168.1.13, but it gives a general failure when I try to do a test page.

I would ultimately like ot have it set up as a network printer on XP. How do I do that?

That printserver doesn't use tcp/ip from windows. It only works with Unix tcp/ip. I've ran into these printservers and the only way to get them to work in windows is to add the dlc/llc protocol, and then you can print from the machine that you added the protocol to. You can then share the printer from that system and have other people print to it. Check this page out from HP and look at the supported network operating systems.
