4k vs 1440p

I didn't bother reading through the entire thread, but if your budget is still at $500, I would not go 4k. You're going to have to spend twice that at least on a 4k display that is big enough to use as an everyday monitor. You will be miserable trying to read text on a 28" 4k monitor. 1440p is definitely the way to go. You will get a much better quality 1440p monitor at $500 than you will 4k.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the Asus monitor that is 1440p I linked earlier... Watching out for maybe a price cut somewhere

Scaling still isn't very good in windows and at 100% you need a 40in screen to match the ppi of the 1440p screens. I would definitely recommend the 1440p screens, especially the 21:9 version. If you are on a budget you can get the 27in ones off eBay for 180-250 such as:
