>4k cluster size: worth it?

i just installed a 74g raptor drive for my primary OS and programs. I'm about to format the second partition for my programs but am wondering if the performance increases are worth making the cluster size larger than 4kb. Using NTFS on winXP, of course.

Try StorageReview.

If you go with larger clusters, your files will take up more space on your HD, especially the small ones.

I would leave it alone; space is pretty precious on a 74GB Raptor, and we have to assume that Microsoft knows what they're doing. :Q

yeah that's what i figured. I left it at default because i figured the performance increases probably wouldn't be huge, or it would be really commonplace to tweak your system using cluster size mods. I have 320 gigs of alternate space to store my larger files, so space isn't really a big deal. The 74 gig would be used for 15gig OS and 60gigs of programs. Right now all my programs only take up 30 gigs.

I've partitioned and formatted a large drive for video editing...
The cluster size on the main C: WindowsXP partition is 16kb.
I set the cluster size on the larger D: partition at 64kb.
I used Partition Magic 8 to do the dirty work. 64kb is as large a cluster size option as I can get. 😱

Will these cluster sizes be optimal for the drives purpose?
