4gb memory in x64 windows and no surround sound with x-fi

Apparently this is the problem.

If you have 4gb of system memory on a machine with Windows XP pro 64bit you will not be able to get surround sound to work with an X-fi sound card.

I have the elite pro card and when I disabled 2 gig of ram surround starts working, with 4gb I can only get sound out of either the front two speakers or back two, not both at once.

A driver should be able to fix this but apparently creative is mum on the whole problem eventhough many people report the same problem.

Anyone have any ideas on how to maybe fix this so I can actually use the extra 2gb of memory I paid for AND my sound card as it was meant to be with surround?

Seeing as you're on x64, it most likely has to do with limited drivers... Manufacturer's really don't see much of a reason to provide fully functional drivers for a niche market like xp64, since they consider their resources better spent developing for xp32.

I really don't want to start 'one of those' discussions, but do you have any reason to run x64 (besides maybe farcry)? All the problems with limited drivers/functionality don't make it worth the effort unless you have MORE than 4gb, or actually have a program that requires 64-bit. Performance wise, I haven't seen any benefit of 64bit documented either. If you really want 64bit, it'd be best to wait for vista.

Well apparently you cannot run over 2.75g in windows x32 so I would be screwed in that direction too...

I dont see why 64bit drivers aren't the norm now that every cpu made is 64bit. Why not take advantage of the extra speed and use a 64 bit OS?

And yes it is a driver issue, however, someone surely has made some modded drivers out there, since creative seems incapable of it?

Well, have you downloaded the new driver from creative (v2.09.0001)?

You could always email creative support and see if they're holding back a beta driver, too.
