4Gb DDR2-533

I just built a new PC running Windows XP Pro/SP2 with 4 GB of ram. However windows only sees it as 2.75GB. Is it maxed out at that? Even though it says 2.75GB is it using the whole 4 GB? Is the other 2 GB a waste id not?

Thanks!

xp 32 bit only sees up to a max of 3.25GB...vista will (does) see all 4GB and more. also windows xp 64 bit sees 4GB.

so yes, the other 1.75GB will be wasted...

I think I remember reading something about 32 bit XP and Vista systems using "shadow caching" for the remaining ram that windows dosent detect.

Also, I believe XPSP2 actually has 4 GB of addresses depending on you hardware config. You see what remains after the hardware addressing uses up their allocation first.

Something like that.

Vista 32bit wont see 4GB. It handles this the same as XP does. There are a lot of vista/4gb threads about this issue. The only 32bit ms OS that will see 4GB are xp (pre sp2) and 2003

You either heard wrong or were listening to a numbnuts.
If it cant read it, then it certainly wont be able to use it.
