I dont really follow cell phones much. After I lost my k750i, I pretty much became bitter about the idea of tiny expensive things in general.

Just poking around at stuff got me this though, which has rekindled my interest: Future Bandwidth

2.5gb/s over large wireless areas with the client going 20km/h is nothing to sneeze at, especially considering most of our desktops only do 1gb/s plugged into the wall.
(yes I have considered the fact that it was probably only stable for a few packets, but nonetheless, impressive)

I think I will just wait for this to come out and be usable in any way, which should give me sufficient time to get over my bitterness(scheduled to be released in 2010). Im thinking 200gb on a pocketPC/phone w/6inch LCD + 4G + H.264 streaming/downloading + x64 ULV proc = happy mobile user.

Anyways, I thought I would post this cause its always fun to dream about what is to come.

At this rate, mobility would be a small concern, because Gb/s of any sort on the Internet at consumer rates would be either (a) complete overkill, a solution without a (good) problem or (b) a major revolution in application/data/etc.

I say pipe dream, even for 2010, as you need all links to have that capability, and few links do for the forseeable future especially when multiplied by users. But it's fine to dream -- pass the pipe please, I'll take a puff.

You can already do what you are talking about, to an extent.
Laptop + EVDO + VPN into your house or through HTTP(much faster) H.264 is just a codec which strength at low bitrates, so it works wonders even now.

In the end, even watching a DVD(mpeg2)/HD(wmv/h.264) quality video only requires about 6-8Mbps, so with EVDO currently nipping at the heels of 1Mbps, we aren't too far away

BTW, iirc, Kyocera is coming out with, or rather, has probably already come out with an EVDO Router :evil:


Keep in mind that EVDO and HSDPA have ceilings of 20Mbps and 14.4Mbps respectively, so the good stuff isn't that far away

I dont think so really, remember thats canadian currency, so its only like 3 dollars american . But seriously, only 5 bucks more for broadband internet wherever there is cell phone coverage seems pretty reasonable to me. If you get some sort of WiMax capable phone, you could extend your internet based phone line to anywhere there is WiMax coverage, which would be very cost effective if you are a regular cell phone user.
