Note that this LulzSec leak of an AT&T document says that they’ll be aiming to have their LTE network up and running by August or September of 2011 with an iPad and iPhone “migration” slated to start at that same time.

Pretty ambitious for AT&T to have an LTE running a few short months when they've done nearly nothing with their next generation infrastructure? Heck, their HSPA+ network is only barely functional. AT&T is in 4th(3rd) place out of all the national carriers with operating a 4G network.

Up and running by September I'm sure means one city up and running. Like you said, it takes a very long time to build out a network.

everyone knows lighting up LTE doesn't mean full coverage.

AT&T 3G has been out for ages and people only noticed it when Apple finally pushed their iPhone 3G out. And even til 2011 people are still talking about coverage issues. Can you imagine how bad the network was in 2006?

I find the LTE iPhone much more questionable than the AT&T network. Current (and near future) LTE modems guzzle power like it's going out of style. That's not going to change for at least a year. I can't see Apple taking that kind of a plunge given that they held off on 3G for the same reason.

I had an original iPhone in the first few months. As more and more people got them the network got worse and worse till eventually it plateaued and started getting better. I am a big fan of the Verizon iPhone.

LTE is just a small step up from HSPA+ so it's not like it's a major upgrade like it was for verizon. all of AT&T's towers support HSPA+, they are working on the back end bandwidth now. for a lot of the newer towers going LTE is just a firmware upgrade

I think people are reading way too much into this. The SGSN has an S4 interface which connects to the LTE PGW, but it's still a 3G connection to the internet. It's all part of the 3GPP plan to have interoperability with 3G networks. To "migrate" is to simply give an path from the SGSN to ePC, but again only as a 3G connection. So what they plan to do is migrate all their current iPads and iPhones over the S4 interface, instead of the current infrastructure, SGSN to GGSN.

What's more interesting is they plan on doing rate limiting based upon the session you initiate. In other words, expect tier based pricing.

Page 5 shows the S4 interface.

qualcomm is supposed to start shipping a LTE radio chip in a few months that supports everything from LTE down to CDMA on one chip. unlike the hack that is the Thunderbolt. the verizon iphone is already using a qualcomm radio chip unlike all the other iphones.

wouldn't surprise me if apple is going to be the first customer to release a product based on this chip in a month or two
