Now that the price of crucial ddr2-1066 has finally come down ($70 AR at egg), I'm going to pick up a second pair for my comp. As far as XP goes, is there anything I need to do once I go from 2 to 4g or any BIOS settings I should change (680i board)?

No you don't have to change anything. I believe you already know that using a 32 bits operating system, you will only see 3,25 to 3,5 GB of ram. If you're using a 64 bit XP, then everything will be perfect.

Do you really have a processor running fast enough on a 680i board to make use of 1066?

NV chipsets can run memory and FSB asynchronously.

To the OP: Make sure to check your BIOS and update to whichever works best with 2GB+. On my 650i, more than 2GB was a problem addressed with a BIOS update. Other considerations like others said is that you won't see all of that 3GB. There might also be some issues with dual channel with some of that RAM being unaddressable in 32-bit. Then there's potential problems with apps/drivers in a 32-bit OS with more than 2GB of addressable physical memory. If you see flaky performance at previous settings/speeds you'll know where to start troubleshooting.

I realize that when under xp I won't get full use, but I do have a couple copies of vista I haven't gotten around to dual booting yet (mainly to see what it looks like and some of the MS DX 10 only games) that I plan on installing.

Vista will only help if it's the 64-bit release, otherwise you're still stuck with the artificial limitations imposed by MS on their 32-bit OSes.

Keep in mind that with 4 modules you are doubling the load on the memory controller vs 2 modules. If you are unstable after adding the 2nd pair, you may need to increase the memory controller voltage. Nvidia calls their memory controller SPP.

I had to RMA several of my 2gb kits. I originally had the ddr2 1000's, but the last set I got back in return was the 1066. Not sure if it's been because of crucial going to the 1066's or the bios patches for the board, but I'm now able to run with voltage and default where before I'd have to crank it up just to get these 2 to work.

It's the 64bit. A shame really that vista went the way of Win me as I got 3 free copies of vista :(

Please PM me; i'll take the Vista copies off your hands & put them to use since you can't figure out the benefits of using a current OS vs. an outdated one.
