Simple choice between above two options. I play Arma 3 mostly but occasional Skyrim, BF3, Crysis 3 and BF4 soon. I'll initially be using the two 6990's from current rig before going 290X crossfire or 290 (if and when it exists) possibly/probably tri-fire or -heaven forbid 780ti SLI.
I will be at 1920/1200 initially going to 2560/1440 in new year or possibly 4k or 5760/1080 or 7680/1440. Which to buy. I suspect for higher resolutions/4K I'll need more real cores pumping out pixels and don't mind paying £200-250 extra for the additional cores.
Sorry if this sounds like a re-post but I really can't for the life of me decide. want maximum gaming performance but also as much 'future proofing' (I know it doesn't exist) as possible.

The 4930k will help a lot with BF4, likely. Multiplayer games have taken advantage of more cores, especially for the BF-series. Other than that, you would be similar or better in almost every instance using the 4930k.

The only concern I would have about a 4770k right now is that crossfire 290X transfers its images over PCI-E. There is some discussion in the reviews about whether that is going to change which CPUs/motherboards make sense. All the crossfire reviews I have seen so far have been on X79 and hence have avoided the problem, but there is a chance performance in crossfire on the 290X is impacted by the lower bandwidth available with a 4770.

I would recommend the 4770 but watch out for some reviews of the 290X in crossfire on that platform to make sure there isn't a problem. I think its unlikely there will be a big issue there but make sure before you buy expecting to upgrade to 290X CF.

Arma 3 seems to gain nothing from additional cores found on IB-E. For BF4 obviously the 4930K is better. Other than BF4, you probably won't see the difference between either platform for gaming. The 4770K setup would be cheaper though of course.

Good point, I hope someone does an in-depth CF review of the new 290/290x cards using both X79 and Z-series MBs.

You know what my answer would be.

But as far as core usage. What apps you use ? Do you do video editing or run a DAW ? Or heavy PS work, then just get the better priced one , 4770k Haswell will do you justice. gl
