Quick question gentlemen and ladies:

I purchased last night a 4890 XT and my power supply is rated 500 - I had an 8800GT which died recently and I use a QX6850 processor as well in my comp. Should I reconsider getting a bigger power supply or will my current one handle it?

If you'd like a sweet PSU that is a revolution in the PSU industry, the Enermax Revolution is just that.

Surely you're not recommending a 850-1050w PSU for a 4890 and quad core

And OP, 500w is theoretically more than plenty for that setup, but just to be sure how old is the PSU and what brand/model number?

If it's a decent PS, from a reputable manufacturer, it shouldn't have any problems. However, if it's some cheap Rosewill or HEC, you'll probably want to replace it.

You guys understand that the 4890 (120w) uses less than the 4870 (130w). Going from an 8800gt (85w) to a 4890 is only a 35w bump.

not that it really makes a difference here but some reviews show the 4890 using more power than the 4870 though.

Most were less, are you referring to the guru3d article?

cant remember where I saw it I just know there was more than one review that showed the 4890 consuming more power than the 4870. I guess I could look through all the reviews but its not really a big deal plus I am feeling quite lazy today.

I would get a new PSU.

I just did a upgrade thats close to that(Sapphire 4830 to a XFX 4890XT, in system in sig) and my AC 550W PSU was not enough to handle the load. I ended up going with a Corsair 850TX because i intend to go crossfire in the future so wanted to make sure i had enough juice. If staying with one card i would have went with a 650w. my $.02.

You know it is a velocity micro power supply - can't seem to get more info on the part - I am going to have to check on the amps for the connections. Perhaps that with time killed the 8800.

Having owned both cheap-o branded, generic, name brand, and top-of-the line PSU's, I would always recommend that you buy a nice PSU.

I would recommend a PcPower, Corsair or something similar. I once built a nice SLI gaming rig and overclocked it to the max. I couldn't figure out why i was having stability problems, even after changing out cpus, motherboards and graphics cards - it turned out to be an off-brand 750watt PSU that was the culprit.

Always get a nice PSU.

Good luck!

I know some of you may hate me for this but can I ask for some recommendations around the 50-75 range? EDIT: Just looked through Newegg and it looks like $100 will be the minimum i'm going to have to spend. Any thoughts?

it just depends whats on sale but you should have no trouble finding something decent for under 75 bucks. my Antec Earthwatts 650watt psu was 69.99 with free shipping when I got it Nov last year from Newegg. the Antec Earthwatts 500watt psu was on sale for $49.99 at the time but they sold out and didnt get anymore until the sale was over so I went with the 650watt.

I got my Corsair 850TX on sale for $108 Canadian, so im sure you can find a 650w for under 100 for sure.

50--75 range ? Is kinda hard anything i see in that range is a older model and doesnt have any PCI-E 6+2 pins just the older 6pin. So future upgrades could be hampered and forced into using cable extentions. Molex to 8pin like these http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16812198022 . Thats the only problem with the psu the guy yh125h linked above. Its not future proof.

If you can spend a little more cash would buy this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817371015

or this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817341019

or this one
