I am working on a new build, quadcore i5 with windows 7 64 bit. I have an 8800gt right now and am used to the performance from that. Im switching to ati and i'm not sure where to go, 5xxx series? or 4890- higher performance than 5770 but no dx11 support?

I don't think dx 11 support now is a big deal, I mean i still use dx 9 in windows xp. What does everyone think. Jump for a 4890 now for 160 at newegg? or save up and get a 5850? or higher series? Thanks

You can't go wrong with the value of a 4890 right now, unless you are worried about DX11 gaining ground so fast. I'd say go for the 4890.

Depends on what your tolerance for selling used parts is. The 4890 for $160 is a great value. DX11 is unlikely to matter in the next six months or so. Buy it, enjoy it for six months to a year (until you can buy the 58xx or its refresh), sell it and upgrade for cheaper than buying a 58xx today (assuming you can find a 58xx to buy in the first place.)

Get this 4890:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161299

It will last you long enough to play any current games maxed out + future games. Don't be worried about DX11 since DX10 and DX10.1 cards will still be able to play those games.

In a year+ time, the 5800 series will be a lot cheaper than the raised prices now. Don't get suckered into paying $310 for a 5850 when you could get two 4890's for almost the same price.

I just pulled the trigger on the 4890, easily the best value right now. If history is anything to go by it will be at least a couple of years before DX11 becomes relevant, never mind desirable.

Have also recently purchased a 4890, i got the Asus model with a non-stock HSF. Awesome value for money and performance per £$£$£$.

If as long as DX11 is not a major concern :)

By the time a serious number of DX11 titles are out, i imagine there will be a wider range and better value DX11 offerings.

I thought long and hard about buying a 4890, but in the end the I didn't see the real world difference between it and my current 8800 Ultra being large enough to make it worthwhile.

Well, don't be too sure about that. DX11 is poised to take off much better and much faster than DX10 did (or tried to). I expect DX11 to be much more widely used than DX10 ever was. Especially too because it is easier to code for than DX10; developers will gravitate towards it.

Just my 2 cents. :D

The 8800GT is a great card. Unless you're really unhappy with it, save your money until it stops being a great card.

Exactly. I usually wait until my video card can no longer handle any of the "must-have" games to my satisfaction. My 8800 GTS-512 is still going strong after two years.

ATI or Nvidia would love nothing more than if everyone fell for their marketing that tries to convince everyone that you need their latest video card arch in order to fully enjoy the latest releases.

Have you tried enjoying stalker: clear sky on a 1920x1200 monitor with that card? I have, and it wasn't pretty. Literally. Cranking eye candy gave me single digit frame rates and without eye candy it looks like Morrowind.

A demo is available. That was also the first time I could honestly say my 8800 was not enough.

I have, and it ran fine for me @1920x1200/high quality with a quad 3.6ghz. Did you turn off FSAA? It's not necessary at that res.

I went with a 4890 about 3 weeks ago, I got tired off waiting for a 5850. It blows my 8800GTS512 away. You have to take into account eye candy cranked up and the minimum fps, not always the maximum or the average in a benchmark. I game at 1920 x 1080.

This. And I was using a g92 8800gts heavily oc'd. Switched to an LCD just before, so couldn't go down to 16x12 without it looking like crap like I could when the game was too demanding with my CRT.
I would say go for the 5000 series, as I'm feeling the 4890 isn't quite enough for this res for my preference, but with the price raping I'd still probably go with a 4890 unless money is no concern.

Hey James1701, why don't you go ahead and unfuck the formatting by removing those images and just post the numbers, or resize/crop the pictures.

I do agree that DX11 will have much higher support than DX10 ever did but DX11 is not easier to code for. DX10 is essentially a subset of DX11. Basically think of DX11 as being the same as DX10 but with more features.

What if you were going from a 4850 512mb to a 4890 1gb? Would the swap be worth while?

Hi Guys,

I could use a little help. I'm on a budget of $1,000 and building a gaming pc based upon the Anand System Buyers Guide by Wesley back in July 09 here: http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.aspx?i=3610&p=5

My newbie question is regarding the Radeon HD 4890 1GB OC Edition. Are the two following gpu's the same?

MSI R4890-T2D1G OC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - OC Edition - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127427 (currently not available)

Radeon HD 4890 1024MB GDDR5 PCIe 2.0 Graphics Card
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...0309370#rebate ($190)

I'd buy the one recommended from New Egg but it's currently not available so I'd like to pick up the one listed by Micro Center especially since it’s on sale but I'm not sure if it has the same OC abilities as the one from New Egg.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

@Trusted Advisor - I am pretty sure the only difference between the cards is that the MSI one is guaranteed to overclock since they are selling it at slightly faster speeds. You might be able overclock the other card the same, less, or more, but you never know since overclocking isn't guaranteed. Also, depending on what size monitor you are using, you may not even need to overclock at all, since the card runs my system very well.
