Ok so i have a 4890, it OC's very well and i am very happy with its performance(unless trying to play crysis maxed out with any AA)
However there is a problem, it has some coil whine, or at least i think its coil whine. It makes a annoying humming sound when in some 3d games, thats the weird part is its only some and the ones where it does make noise with are not even the most demanding. For example Defense grid and Mass Effect 1 make the noise very badly while Crysis or Mass Effect 2 are silent.
I know everyone will say return it, i have spoken to XFX and the short answer is i am not returning it because i will get a crappier card in return. Long answer as follows: They told me they do not and will not have any OC edition 4890's in stock again, i will either get a 4890 NON OC edition card(small chance, say 20%
or a 4870 or 5830(40% chance each). This is unacceptable as i consider any of them to be downgrades, i got a good OC on my 4890 the chances of me repeating that on a non OC edition binned GPU are small at best, and the 4870 is obviously weaker than the 4890. The 5830 would be my best option but they wont say for sure thats what i will get, and while it does about the same average FPS in most games the 4890 almost always has higher minimum framerate, and by 20-30% in most cases. Minimum framerate is just as important if not more so that average FPS, so i would consider a 5830 a small downgrade, it does have DX 11 but i think is too slow to use it anyways.
Also thought i should mention the OC has nothing to do with noise, noise is the same loudness and happens on the same games even when i underclock it to as low as possible.
So this brings me to what do i buy now. Im open to ideas and i want to spend $300 CDN tops, and would prefer not to deal with rebates and buy from NCIX, I dont want to order from the US and have to pay duty and shipping.
Obviously on the ATI side i will have to go 5850 or 5870 for an improvement. Im thinking if i stick ATI i will go for a 5850 and OC the hell out of it.
Whats my options on the Nvidia side, i have not paid much attention lately to them since the 5000 series was launched and Nvidia was no where in sight, i am however willing to go to Nvidia if it is a good thing to do for price/performance at this price point, i have no brand loyalty.
