Hey, i have recently purchased a ati radeon 4890 graphics card, its a great card and im really happy with it except for 1 problem, the noise! Its extremely noisy and sounds like a hairdryer most of the time. Is there anything i can do or buy to make it quieter? Bearing in mind im not too knowledgable about computer parts e.t.c but i am aware that there are various cooler devices that i can use and turn of the graphics card fan completely, am i right?

Your help would be much appreciated guys and i would like my computer to be pretty silent ideally!

thanks.

It's your HSF ... can you take out the card and blow it and make shure its clean. Worst case you can WD 40 that thing.

If fan is making noise, its either going to die soon or is already dead and its a ghost hehe,

I had a his 4890 and if I left it in auto the fan was pretty quiet. You can adjust your fan speed in ati control panel.

get a AC Twin turbo pro. Works wonders and probably should help you with OC'ing as well.
Or get the cheaper S1 rev2 if you have a spare 120mm fan lying around and ziptie it to the HS. Not sure if 4890 needs modding to fit, though I doubt it.

Exactly. My 4890 runs at 23% fan speed at idle. I can't hear it over my other components/case fans. However, in gaming it is loud (but then there is videogame music and sounds so I cant hear it).

The problem with getting an aftermarket cooler is VRM cooling. So if you go that route, make sure to get this: http://www.frozencpu.com/products/95...890HD4870.html

This is a pretty cheap solution if you can ziptie a 120-mm fan to it: http://www.svc.com/fan-acces1.html

If the fan is failing though, you still probably have warranty on the videocard so contact your manufacturer.

If afterburner can control the fan you could make a custom fan profile for the card that makes it more quiet. Though you really need to make sure that you keep the temps reasonably low at all times.

My 4890 has the Zalman cooler on it (made by Gigabyte) and it's quiet, stable, and cool.

If trying to adjust your fan speed by software doesn't yield desired results, spring for a better GPU cooler, and put some arctic silver on there while you're at it.
