in games like fallout 3 and just cause 2, my 4890 seems to be getting around 40-50 fps at times at 1280x1024 resolution. i thought that this resolution would be a piece of cake for a 4890. turns out i was wrong? is this the gpu's problem or could it be a cpu bottleneck? i'm running a stock i3 530 atm.

edit: i used this on my other rig (phenom ii x4 955 be oc'd to 4 ghz) and got the same fps and settings at 1920x1200, so there is definitely something wrong there

40 or 50 fps would be about right if you have the settings maxed for Just Cause 2 as that game is very demanding. Fallout 3 on the other hand should never drop below 60 fps at that res with a 4890. even an 8600gt can run that game on nearly max settings at 1280 at over 40-50 fps.

and which one of these comps is the HP with the 300 watt psu that you mentioned in your other thread? whichever one it is STOP using the 4890 in it at all.

absolute max settings on both. 8x AA, 16/15x AF, highest settings, etc. most of the time in fallout 3, it's fine. but sometimes in open areas, the fps may dip as low as 30. just cause 2 simply just lags all the time. i'm lucky to get a 60 fps int hat game.

and i upgraded the psu to a seasonic s12II 520 watts.

have you thought about turning the AA down??? of course Just Cause 2 is going to lag on those settings. turn high res shadows off, put shadows on medium and lower the AA to 4x then the game will probably be just fine. as for Fallout 3 that game tends to hitch a bit when first coming into new areas. again turning down AA a bit should help with that.

lol, well that was quick since your thread was from this morning.

Use GPU-Z and make sure the PCI Express bus width is at x8 or x16?

Also your probably CPU limited with the dual core i3

Also sames you tried it on another rig and a higher resolution sort of proves my CPU limited theory.

yes i've tried it on another rig at a higher resolution, but turning DOWN the graphics settings at 1280x1024 causes the lag to go away, so i'm having doubts to whether it's a cpu bottleneck.

In Fallout games, the HD5830 gets > 70 fps avg and in the 40s for min at 1080P 4AA/16AF Ultra settings. In their testing HD5830 dropped to ~ 40 fps in mins.

GameGPU.ru = Fallout:NV @ 1280x1024 8AA/16AF
HD4890 = 98 fps avg. / 75 fps min

^ Check if your GPU is thottling back in GPU-Z / MSI Afterburner. Make sure your GPU works at 850mhz and your ram is at 3900-4000mhz (or would show up at 1950/2000 mhz). But if you are saying that sometimes the performance drops to 40-50 fps minimums, that's again expected.

GameGPU.ru = In Just Cause 2 @ 1280x1024 8AA/16AF
HD4890 = 48 fps average / 26 fps min

Computerbase.de = Just Cause 2 @ 1680x1050 4AA/16AF
HD4890 = 37 fps average

So there is no way you'll get 60 fps avg. in that game, and you should be dipping into low 30 fps and even lower at your resolution. That's completely in-line with the performance of the 4890. Just Cause 2 is a fairly modern game and is demanding (and has great visuals).

ok i understand just cause 2. but this is a slightly overclocked 4890. 920 mhz on the core and 1100 mhz on the memory and works at those speeds. i dont understand how there is constant dips on the fps in fallout 3. especially at 1280x1024. it seems that everytime i turn around in fall out 3, the fps just dips to maybe 30. at highest possible settings
