4870X2 sound and AV reciever...

I'm wondering whether I can pass sound and video out from my 4870X2 graphics card (as it has an onboard 7.1 audio card) to an AV reciever via HD-cable-in and then pass video out to my HDTV?

From the people at JBHI i've spoken to, they seem to think that computers do not 'talk very well' with AV recievers and seem to think this might not work. Has anyone here got a home theatre system with a computer passing audio+video to a reciever for the surround sound and then passing video out to a TV?

Well, I had my computer passing audio through optical to a receiver, and video though a DVI-HDMI cable. No experience with a 4870X2 but I don't see why it wouldn't work just like a BR player or game console. Some video cards can have issues with the EDID of a receiver, and may refuse to output anything above 1920x1080 or even any signal at all. If that happens you need a DVI Detective.

(Also, make sure the receiver doesn't just pass the audio through to your TV. Generally such receivers cost upwards of $300. For instance, the Onkyo 506 does not extract audio, and the 606 does. Same thing with Denon's 6xx and 7xx, though Denons cost a lot more in general.)

What he said. I have an Onkyo TX-SR505 and I'm pretty sure the HDMI ports on it are plain passthrough. Basically the thing is just a 2-to-1 HDMI switch.

Wonderful, the exact answer I was looking for Thanks alot for the detail. I've slightly changed my plan, in that if the DVI-HDMI cable solution you mentioned doesnt work for whatever reason, and will connect my PC directly to my TV using a HDMI cable and then pass an optical cable into my reciever for audio.

Both cables will be less then 3m in length...would there be any possible syncing problems that you could fortell?

No syncing problems as long as the source from your AV is set for optical when you are watching stuff from your TV.

Some higher end receivers do take audio via HDMI. What receiver do you have? I've got a denon avr 1909 specifically for hdmi audio.
