If I had that choice and the cash for either one...It would be the GTX260 Core 216 for me.

But your situation may be different.

Although right now I am waiting to step-up to the 55nm Core 216

the choice is between 4870 and a regular gtx260, not the core 216

4870 and the 260 trade blows, so the best bet is to check out the benchmarks for the games you want to play and get the one that gets better frames for the games you want. Failing that, go with the cheaper one (or the one you look for cooling/warranty or whatever other factors) since the performance is similar. Since you didn't specify, the 4870 512MB version is probably not as good if you run higher res and high AA/AF, though. The 1GB version will handle most things just fine.

The 4870 1GB is priced much lower than the GTX260 (216) for some reason. I thought the cards were pretty similar in performance.

It depends. If it was 512mb 4870 vs 260 for same price I would opt for 260. Just because it has more vram and overclocking abilities. As of now 4870 512mb is cheaper than 260.

4870 1gig vs 260 is a tough call.

4870 1gig vs 260 216 I would choose the 260.

From what I know, the 4870 512mb is generally faster then the plain gtx 260.

The 1 gb 4870 is faster hands down over the gtx 260 and is roughly equal with the gtx 260 c216, maybe a slight edge in performance for the Nvidia card.

So, yeah, spend the extra $50 for the c216.
