The 512mb 4870 shouldn't even be in consideration... 512mb of memory isn't enough.

I do not agree with that statement. There is certainly benefit to the 1GB model, especially if you like AA or are using a 1980x1200 monitor. But even a 512MB card can still game pretty damn well these days.

Thanks very much for all the advice. I'm going with the cheaper 4870 1GB.

Good luck with your new card! I'm really enjoying my 4870 so far.

I have sli 8800gts 512 @ 1680 x 1050 E8600 @ 4.2
and vista logs reports error (I think 500 )-system out of vram hard drive thrashing has occured.
-in warhead , farcry2 , clearsky should have added that.
-had enough fps but still had to turn down settings
-512 vram you can live with if you have it , but I won't tell anyone to buy a card with 512vram today
-shortly 1gig won't be enough -per reviews of the gtx295

Oh this is ridiculous... Here I am chugging away with my formerly-state-of-the-art 8800GT
512mb. The 1GB was considered a waste A YEAR AGO. And now I don't have enough?
You know what kids, when I was your age, we had a 8800GT 256mb. Yea, that's right. (I'm 15 :p)
