I just found out I need to redo the brakes on my car taking my video card fund to less than $150 now. It appears that the only modern card I can get for that is the 4870. Is that a good option? Should I wait for a while and see if prices drop more? is there an alternative?

Just take out the floor boards and Fred Flintstone it.

A bit more information would help. PSU size, current CPU/MB/Memory, Monitor Res, Games Played, Shoe Size, etc

If the rest of your system is up to snuff, you'll notice a big improvement going to the 4870.

I have the 640mb version of your card and from all the research I've done it looks like even the 4850 would be a good step up, even at 1920x1200 (not sure if you are at that resolution).

if you have a capable PC with a fast CPU - then 4870 is more than 2x faster

alternatives would be GTX 260 in the same price/performance range

The 4870 is a very good video card and would make you a good upgrade.

based on what? if you read the other replies at least they have said IF the rest of system is up to par then yes. if he has 1gb of ram , single core cpu and mediocre psu then no it would not be a good upgrade at all.
