Ok I am getting very bitter by now, no matter how much I read I can't figure how it works, atm I got a Auzentech card and I would like to use that, but how is the sound connected to the 4870. I know the dvi - hdmi is special and CAN transfer both video and sound which dvi normally cant do.
But its how the sound is transfered to the HD4870 I do not get, because I did not get the impression that it has imbuild soundcard.

Please let this be the post where I finally understand it :(

I always thought myself, that the 4870 had an onboard sound chip. And it would output over HDMI. Therefore the sound card or integrated sound would have to be disabled for this to work.

I could be wrong though.

From a website I found:

You need to use the adapter that comes with the video card attached to an HMDI cord for the audio to pass through.

1. Yes, you only need the DVI/HDMI converter that came with the 4870, HDMI cable and some sort of reciever that can use HDMI sound.

2. No, the sound uses PCIe connector with the audio passthrough, no case internal cabling needed.

3. You should enable the HDMI devices and set em as default audio devices, and/or disable other playback devices.

I do believe the sound is handled by the HD4870 and passed from that to the Source ie. TV.

I dont think the soundcard gets involved at all. I have used the feature a little bit but not extensively.

Someone else may be able to advise properly.

To me it jsut "sounds" strange if AMD suddenly entered the sound scene as well without a dedicated card, instead of just using the either onboard soundcards or dedicated, especially the latter. But I might be wrong

the 4870 has an onboard sound chip i think.

if you want to watch a movie with sound over the hdmi use the dvi-hdmi adapter they include and in your control panel for sound settings select ATI HDMI Rear Out.

it works well for me. after im done with watching i go back and select my x-fi so i get sound out of my pc speakers.

Also a completely sidenote, there is no problem with running the X4870 on my IP35 Pro right? Other than abit limited bandwidth ofc
