Has anyone run a 486 DX 66MHz cpu without a heatsink? I'm thinking its possible, but i dont wanna fry the chip and have to find a new one if i burn it out.
 
Had a Cyrix DX2-66 witha pretty green heatsink and no fan.

Ran fine... most of the time. Some issues compiling Doom Wads but as I understand it, that was Cyrix related. Not entirely compatable then...
 
I have some equipment at work that runs a 486/66 with no heatsink and no cooling at all in a sealed box. Temp. in the summer can get up to over 100f. It seems to work with no problems.

It makes me nervous everytime I see it though. I'd put at least a heatsink on it, just for peace of mind if nothing else.
 
I used to run a DX2/66 with no HSF, and a DX4/100 overdrive w/ the stock passive cooling.

The 66 had no issues, stable while running Hexen, used to run pretty much 24/7.

They get damn hot, for sure, but I believe that's an advantage of the ceramic packaging - they dont seem to mind it too much.

But in any case, a 486 heatsink cant be worth much more than 10c 😉

Got an old video card with a heatsink on it? That'll do the job...
 
I have a heatsink for a 486, i just don't have any frag tape or thermal adhesive to attach it, but I guess I'll go out and buy some
 
Don't worry about thermal epoxy or frag tape....just put regular heatsink compound over most of the surface, leaving the corners clean. Put your favorite (better than Elmer's glue) adhesive there to hold the sink in place. Stick them together, hold with some pressure till glue sets, voila. Superglue works great, epoxy too, wouldn't go with a rubbery glue myself.

my first computer was a 100 MHz 486 DX and it did not have a heatsink or fan. It ran great for about 5 years until I upgraded.

I am a collector of old CPUs, so trust me when I tell you that you do not need any heatware at all.

you sound like a real expert there, what the hell is heatware in relation to cpus?
 
My old 486sx/25 had no heatsink. (it also had no math co-cpu the pos) Ran it for 10 years with no problems before I built a new computer.
 
A 486 can run without heatsink, but I would not recommend it. If you can get your hands on a HS, use it. A fan is not necessary, but you can use one if you're paranoid 🙂
 
I tried no fan but not no heat sink
but my heatsink is really small and I tryied touching it when the machine was on. Not very hot.
