Hey quick question. Friend has a 8800GTX and wants to replace it. Money is an issue so I recommended the 4850 with the possibility of 4870 if he finds a good deal.

Am I correct in that the 4850 1Gig, would be a good upgrade and he will see a performance gain? He mainly plays WoW but does a lot of raiding.

He wanted to keep the cost to around $130-$150.

No, I don't think it's a good upgrade.

Going to a 4870 1gb/gtx 260 at least, if he wants to see an important improvement. And I've heard that ATi cards are not that amazing in WOW.

He won't see much of a performance gain (coming from an 8800 GTX) with an HD 4850, especially in WoW. If his old card is dead and can't be RMA'd I'd aim for at least a GTX 260 (216) or HD 4870 if he can find one in that price range. If you have to replace a card you might as well see a performance gain if you can. If not a GTS 250 or HD 4850 would replace the current game play he has (maybe do a little better). WoW tends to be a little more friendly towards Nvidia cards at this moment (although that can change - I've seen the game cycle through which GPU family it likes better a couple of times). HD 4850s are extremely cheap right now.
