Need some opinions on this Asus 4850 512MB card, it's $119 now and people say it has about the same performance as an Nvidia 9800gtx+. I currently have a 9800GT 512MB I bought a couple months ago and was planning on SLIing it near the beginning of the year. Would I see any significant performance boost with the 4850 or 9800GTX? Or should I just wait untill Nvidia and ATI come out with their new line and prices go down again?

My current computer is in my sig and I play mostly Call of Duty 4 and 5, fall out 3, and a few other things like that.

I should also say that when I get the money I'm planning on upgrading my entire system to something like an E7300 or E8400, Gigabyte P45 board, and 4GB ram.

If you want to make an upgrade that really matters in terms of performance, you should get at least a 4870/GTX 260. There really isn't any point in getting the 4850/9800GTX+, because they are just marginally faster then what you have. Heck, you could just volt mod your GT and have the 4850/9800GGTX performance, or almost.

Heya,

The HD4850 is not a significant upgrade over a 9800GT. I play the same games you've listed with an 8800GT 1gig and it plays them just fine maxed out. So you shouldn't have much of an issue (though you're a bit limited with a slower lowed dual core). Not really sure why you need an upgrade right now. Your CPU will limit major videocards. It would take a GTX260 of an HD4870 to get a significant boost. Alternatively, if you have an SLI capable motherboard, just get a 2nd 9800GT for $100 and the two 9800gt's in SLI will stomp out even a single GTX280 for nearly $400.

Cheers,

That $150 price point (HD 4850/9800 GTX+) isn't very compelling anymore. The $100 cards aren't that much slower (like your 9800 GT) and the $200 cards are quite a bit better (HD 4870/GTX 260).

thanks guys, phew. I was really looking for someone to discourage me against it. Reason I bought the 9800gt was because it was so much cheaper and from the benchmarks I saw it seemed like it wasn't that much slower than the high power cards. Guess I'll wait to do a full system upgrade in a year or 2. As I said before I have an SLI board and was planning on adding another card when they come down in price.

Merry Christmas everyone

just keep your current card man no need to upgrade.Get your other parts first and swithc to intel.

By then you can probably get a $150 card that is faster then a gtx 280

9800GT is roughly the 4830, which is about 10% behind the 4850. Like others have said, not really worth it. :)
