4850 + Q6600 = Too much for my 420W Thermaltake?

No. It's a ATX2.03 spec PSU. Socket 775 mobos run on the ATX2.2 spec which requires a 8-pin +12V connector to the motherboard instead of a 4-pin. Get a Corsair HX520 or VX550.

I was actually just in this situation. I had a 430w TruePower 2.0, and I was hoping to run roughly the same hardware. Through the help of the wonderful Anandtech forum community, I decided to upgrade my PSU to a 620HX, and I'm glad I did! Even though it is more money to the list of upgrades, in the end, you'll be happy you did. ;)

That's a bit out of my budget. :(

My thermaltake only cost me around $65 and has held up remarkably well without any problems.

Any recommendations in the < $100 range. Preferrably around $70-80.

If the PSU is out of your budget than so is the graphics card upgrade.

Seriously, you're putting a lot of emphasis on a graphics card and little into the PSU... the HEART of your system responsible for providing clean and stable power to ALL of your components and perfectly capable of destroying ALL of your parts if you cheap out. :(

If you're willing to spend around $80 you can get a Corsair VX550 for $79.87:

BFG LS-550 for $81.83:

Thermaltake TR2 550W for $79.89:

No, don't get me wrong. I've already gone through the cheap PSU route already, which blew out my old athlon system, and is what made me go with Thermaltake in the first place.

But I was just questioning whether a $165 PSU is needed, when one half the price can do the trick.

Thanks for the links, I think I'll go with the Thermaltake, I've had good luck with them in the past and have read nothing but good things about them.

I'm not sure where $165 comes from as you can buy the HX-620 for $139.99 at Buy.com and that's BEFORE a $25 rebate they're currently offering.

Why the higher price? 70 more watts and the three I listed are not modular. Of course, if you don't need 620W and modular cables... ok, sure... I get that. ;)

Edit: Link to Buy.com FYI: http://www.buy.com/prod/corsai...loc/101/203270718.html

Not all Socket 775 motherboards require or even have a jack for the 8-pin connector. I'm not sure what you meant by that.

I got my Corsair HX620 for $100, thanks to CompUSA's fire sale :D

My bad...I think just a lot of the ones I've seen take the 8-pin instead of the four...but then again, I fail at knowing Intel parts :/

For your components, nope. The ones that jonnyGURU listed are half that price and will do the trick. The only real problem with your old one is that it only does 18A on the +12v.
