4850 or 8800gt 512?

just received a 3850 and am having nothing but serious issues w/ it, so it is going back - only 35 days old. it seemed to work very well at first but then started dropping out - black screens, some vpu recoveries and some hard reboots neeeded - and i wasn't pushing the card hard and the temps all stayed easily below 65C load. and yes, i tried 4 different psus all w/the same results.

now that i have an rma for it (minus the restocking fee :(), should i go the mature 8800gt 512 or a relatively new 4850?

at the moment i am gaming on a 1280x1024 lcd and game company of herores, cod4, crysis and good ol bf2.

i could see going to a 22" lcd in the future, but highly doubt a 24", so we are talking a 1680x1050 max res w/ the slight possiblity of 1920x1200 depending on how prices go in the near future.

have the 4850s been reliable? the 3850 i had didn't have the reference cooling, more like a zalman setup, so w/ my issue, i don't think heat was the issue but rather a bad item on the card.

i have had good luck w/ ati for quite some time - 9800pro, x800xtpe, x1800xt and now i have had this serious failure. i know the 4850 is a faster card, but this last issue w/ ati and a tier1 manf has left a bad taste in my mouth for ati :(

let me know your thoughts.

thanks,
bob

4850 is muy bueno... i have a sapphire and an asus... they are faster than an 8800gt 512 in everything but 3d06 in my tests (have an 8800gt, too)... turn the fan up to 60% and they are cool and (pretty) quiet... but you need >= 3.0ghz of >= 2m cache intel goodness to get the full lovin' of the card (but it beat out a 8800gts 640 to move into my 3.2ghz x2 6000 rig)...

People need to stop stressing every time they get a bad part. 99% of products bought from any company these days will work. DOAs happen, deal with them. You make the decision based on the performance and other features of the card.

when i wrote this earlier i was extremely pissed at the manf. i understand that bad cards happen, and i should have not brought that into the equation but the manf only as even though the card has a 3yr warranty, they make it very hard to use their warranty/rma process - and this is from a company that i have used many products from them in the past.

cubeless - i am running a 2160 @ 3GHz. what is the best way to speed up the fan and still retain the 2d/3d speeds so the card can be slow and quiet when not gaming?

fan thing

and u have frames to gain when u upgrade your cpu... that cpu/speed is about the same as my 3.2 6000... i get 33 frames @1600 and 43 @ 1280 on high in crysis (xp)... going to a 3.4 6750 goes to 36 frames @ 1680, and noticeably smoother play (higher lows)...

Get the HD4850. I haven't used an 8800GT but I can tell you when I upgraded from my X1950 it was well worth it. Besides its only $50 more than the 8800GT at most and it'll beat it in everything. If you get an aftermarket cooler and OC it it'll be way better. Also, with AA enabled it gets even more of a lead. Also, IF you do go 1920x1200 then you can just turn things down a bit and it'll run better on a HD4850 than a 8800GT.

thanks. was probably going to go to a 8400/8500 in a bit. atm don't need the extra cpu but i am going to start dong some video stuff so the extra cpu will be less time for me :)

thanks for the info :)

I've had both, and the 4850 is the better card hands down.

Just want to make sure,
Is Accelero S2 a 2 heatpipes version?
Accerlero S1 has 4 heatpipes

more heatpipes = cooler?
or better design = cooler?

he meant accelero s1 version2. the s1 has 4 heatpipes, the s2 has 2 heatpipes. s1 rev2 is the ultimate for a 4850 (or 8800gt for that matter) b/c they have that horrible stock hsf. the only thing holding me back from getting one for my 4850 (should be here tomorrow) is that I only paid $43 diff between selling my 3870 and buying the 4850. getting the s1 would almost double my actual cost, causing the cheap bastard in me untold grief. we'll see how it does with the stock fan.

edit: another way to look at it is that I paid $140 AR for the 4850. If I spend another $35 or so on the s1 v2, I'm up to $175. Not a bad price still, right? well, until you consider all the $229AR shipped deals right now on gtx 260. 4850 is great, and the s1 v2 makes it even better, but it's still not going to hang with a max-overclocked gtx 260 in most instances.

i did take a look at them and will see how it does w/ stock cooling and some minor case fan adjustments. i am only running @ 1280x1024 so i am sure i will be fine even @ stock speeds but in the future things may need to be upped.

i thought the twin turbo looked rather interesting :D

Well, dunno about the 4850, but I've had my MSI 8800GT since Christmas and LOVE it...

I play mostly Source games and at full settings runs like a dream.
