Hello all, currently putting together parts for a new build, and was wondering if my current vid card would hold up in it. Basic Components looking like this:

AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE
MSI 770-C45 mobo
4GB (possibly 8GB if I find a decent deal) DDR3 1600 RAM
Sapphire 4850 512MB 256-bit @ stock (single-slot cooler FTL :frown:)
160GB SATA II Hitachi drive (have a server for media storage)
(haven't decided on PSU yet)

Basically, I have two 1680 x 1050 monitors set up for this rig, and will be gaming on on of them. I mostly play WoW, L4D, and TF2 right now, but will be playing CoD4: MW2 when it comes out this fall. My question is, will this 4850 I have now run things fine at that resolution, and I should hold out on buying a new GPU until fall lines are released, or should I sell the 4850 and get a 4870 X2 or a 4890?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I run a 4850 1GB fine at 1680 x 1050. I only play Fallout 3 currently but I can max all settings in that game. So I imagine you won't have much, if any, trouble.

The two above posters pretty much cover the bases. Keep the card in a well-ventilated case, get a good power supply, and you should be set for whenever you choose to upgrade.

That mobo is at least a 780G, right?

Thanks for the replies guys, I guess I'll be throwing the 4850 into the rig and seeing how it handles. As for the mobo comment, it's a 770 chipset, which from what I can tell is just a budget version of the 780, unless there's something I'm missing?

The 770 chipset just doesn't have onboard video like the 780. I'm sure there are other differences, but nothing major really. It should function well enough for your cause.

And for the games you mentioned, WoW, TF2, and L4D, the HD4850 will max out those games at that resolution with no problems. It should also manage CoD:MW2 just fine since it can certainly play COD:MW and WaW just fine on high settings. So you're just as well off waiting. It's always best to upgrade when you feel your current setup can handle the games you're playing right now. There's no sense in upgrading for a game that hasn't come out yet if you're getting good performance in current games.

You know the x850 (3, 4850) is just right for 1680x1050 gaming. However, as another poster pointed out, you'd be even better off if you could wait for the 5850.

Thanks for the replies guys. The 4850 is sitting in a severely CPU-limited rig right now (Opty 165), so I've never had the opportunity to get it to its full potential. With your reassurance that it'll handle my current games fine, I'm definitely going to wait and see what the fall brings (or next year, other than CoD:MW2, the next big PC release on the horizon for me is Starcraft 2, so quite a ways off).

Thanks for all your help!

yeah... you better wait for the DX11 graphics card... who knows maybe it will be the bang for the buck
