My 4850 started hitting 104c during load, so I removed it and cleaned out the dust, but it didn't look like there was that much dust so I thought it was cactus, however, it now never surpasses 80c under load{HIS ICE COOLER}.....moral of the story, "dust sux".

The 4850 just runs ridiculously hot.. but it sounds like something is making yours run a bit hotter than it should.

Mine idles at 65-70c, and then when gaming it runs at 95-105c..

I got this card the day it was released. never had any artifacts, shutoffs, nothing.. just an absurdly hot video card.

I often wondered if my sensor was off, because I'd be playing games like GTA4 for hours on end, and the thing would be over 100c the whole time.

Yea my 4850 was the same way it was always extremely hot. The stock cooler is partly to blame, it just sucks ass. But those cards can take a beating atleast. My card hit 120c once on the Memio temp when I was volt modding it and it survived. I had to shutdown the computer because I was afraid the card was going to melt but it didn't even phase it. The best investment for a card like that is a Accelero cooler, that is what alot of people ended up going with for 4850/4870's since they ran so hot. I bet they are cheap now and it will give you atleast 20c lower temps and it will be quiet if you put a 120mm fan on it.

That mirrors my experience with the 4850 to. 100c in games...Yet it took it like a champ and never bsod or shutdown, definitely a well built card. The newer cards I have had including a Geforce 570 died under temps of 90c, others would BSOD.

you can also mod your card, like my old 4850, take out the small fan it come w/ ziptie a 120mm or 140mm to the HSF, that for me at least keep it much cooler than original tiny fan could.

4850 was always a hot card IIRC.

Temps still seem pretty high, though, probably couldn't hurt to blow dust out of the cooler and install new thermal paste. Unless you're looking for an excuse to upgrade. :D

Sure it is a hot card, but 83c at idle guarantees that it will overheat the minute that it ramps up. Several possible issues, maybe all of these at once:

1. hsf needs to be reseated.
2. TIM needs to be removed/reapplied
3. HS is covered by dust internally so you need to remove the shroud and clean

Honestly, I'd just start with #3 since 2/1 are a PITA.

Before I got my warranty replacement I reapplied the heat paste and made sure the heat sink assembly was attached very firmly. It dropped temps by at least 5 degrees celsius if not more.
