Would this be card or PSU?

I looked inside to see a single red LED light on, and the "D1601 Overtemp Protect" written on the card near the LED.

Been searching the internet for similar problems, have not been able to find one, but that could be a matter o too many similar keywords

This has happened three times recently. 2 occurred when I manually set the fan to the lowest setting. Although I was only web surfing, I thought i might have done something or a web page increased the gpu activity and it overheated and reset.

It has happened a third time now with the CCC software controlling the fan speed. The card seems to be operating normally. 0% activity it says and idles at 36C, with the lowest fan speed at 40% (when on automatic). Absolutely no warning or a slowdown in the system.

On each occurrence, video output stops, and the fan goes to 100%. I am guessing 100% because the faw whines up and it sounds as if I manually set it to 100%. It doesn't appear that my computer restarted as all the power lights stay on. Have not been playing any games, only desktop publishing. One evening, they occurred together two nights ago, and again just now. Only oddity I was doing at the time was running two F@H cpu clients and or a torrent program. Using the 9.3 Catalyst drivers. Websurfing when it happened.

Should I RMA this card?

Maybe. I use Rivatuner for fan speeds, overclocking and such. I never use ATI's CCC. No problems here.

Which 4830 is it? Have a newegg/tigerdirect link?

I have the same card, and it works great, so it sounds like yours is faulty, or maybe something wrong with your PSU. Your idle temperature seems OK, and I doubt the card is overheating while doing 2D work, so I don't think its a heat or fan issue at all.

I just bought this card and have it for about a week. No problem so far since I have my system on df model; however, the card's fan seem pretty loud when running games.

It happened a 4th time now.

Can the PSU's be so fickle? The GPU is using the least amount of power it can when this has happened the most.

Could anti-virus software be conflicting with the drivers at all? I am using Kaspersky, and I have set all the application filters to exclude whatever items it brought up to be ATI's.

Also, its only happened while I have been using it. I do not have the ratio of the times I have used the computer to the amount of time I was away, but there has been a significant amount of time I have left the computer on while I was away for Folding @ Home.
