Sorry for the Noob question but why do these chips require different boards?

Read one reviewer say a bg downside to 4820K is that the mobos are way more expensive.

Is that true, or are there some good mobos out there for ~the same price?

Any recommendations for a 4820k chip?

Is the upgrade path for a 4820 Mobo any better than a 4770 Mobo?

The two have different pin counts (sockets). Ivy Bridge-E (4820) is LGA 2011 and Haswell (4770) is LGA 1150.

The 4770k would be the better upgrade path, since the Haswell is the first chip to use that socket.

The E is just a way to spend money if you don't know what else to do with it, IMO.
