Hi folks.

Got a call few days ago, a person I know is having trouble with his new computer. He says the computer randomly shut on him while playing games...the tower shut off completely. Go over there, play some games, and after a while the tower shut itself. He said it never did it in windows...I'm like mmm overheat? Restart, check temp in bios...104 degres. install pc probe 2 from asus (he got an asus mb) run the game again (fear)....bam. CPU temp is 80-90 range. goes back to windows... temps drop to about 40-50 in windows.

So I open the case, cooling fan is a generic AMD fan. I guess he bought the boxed version of the CPU. I remove the heatsink... thermal paste is there fine, not too much seem fine. I wipe a tad on the cpu and check contact...contact is good. fan is plugged. why is it overheating so much?

I found the heatsink to be pretty weak, all alu model. is this what amd packages whith these cpus??

what could be the problem?

im guessing its a windsor core. that being said they tend to run a bit hotter, just not that hot. I would get a aftermarket HSF. Also if you have access to a external temp probe then use that to get a 3rd party reading as the cpu sensor might be messed up.
