When the MX system was brought on line the Air Force developed and test-deployed a new launch control system to go with the new missiles. The system failed so miserably that the Air Force reverted to the Minuteman III control system because it works.

And in case you are wondering...

Yep, I used to do a lot of work on the MM III stuff.

It is what is currently in place in the silos.

Nah. Russian equipment is the exact opposite. There is an old Russian saying/idiom (which I don't remember at the moment), that basically says that Russian equipment is made to last. I can bet you they've got some old ass equipment still ticking just fine.

We're talking about launch installations, missiles, and thermonuclear warheads not AK-47s. Just warheads themselves contain innumerable parts, chemicals, and isotopes that are susceptible to aging which can greatly degrade their ability to function. The US spends a small fortune just to model the probable failures.

I'd take that bet and say it is most likely that the Russian strategic nuclear forces are substantially degraded from their prime. Obviously still a signifigant deterrent but I would be shocked if a even a majority of their systems were serviceable.

None of this made me think we might get nuked by our own weapons. And you can drop a nuke from a plane and it won't go bang unless armed first. So.....everything is fine ok?
Also, people think nukes are more powerful than they actually are. They think a single nuke will wipe out half of California or something. I wish my daddy was a defense contractor. Those kids have it so damn good, holy shit.

A borderline untenable nuclear stockpile is a good thing. It adds that extra threat of crazy to our enemies. Not only do they know we have enough nuclear weapons to destroy every major city on the planet in a few minutes, they also know that we don't know what we're doing with them, and that they just might accidentally launch with zero provocation. Wildcard, bitches!

I stand corrected.

But the Air Farce is still well in the lead. :)

I actually also found a fourth one, where a nuclear depth charge went down with a Navy plane.
But after the first on, who really cares :D

Government is just a logistical organization. It's managing people instead of materials.

So....anarchy forever, right?

Minimal fed government.

Fed government's job:

Protect property.
Protect borders.
Protect life of citizens.
Possibly issue currency but they're currently doing a terrible job.

Not the fed governments job:

Financially support citizens.
Regulate economy.
Meddle in international affairs at taxpayer expense.

The state governments can do the rest and make their own laws. You want welfare? Move to a welfare state. You want laissez faire? Move to that state. Works for everyone. Plus it gives us the chance to see which system is better.

4,800 is nothing compared to what we used to have. While I was in the Navy, we had 6 magazines full of nukes aboard, from tactical nukes (B57's) designed to take out a military base or air field to some city busters, B28's and B61's. Never really counted them, but it was definitely in the 3 digit range.

How this old country boy ended up trained and working on them during my time in the Navy, I still have yet to figure out, except maybe that I could pass the Top Secret security background check.

And I also remember the government films we were shown in school about what to do when the 'atomic' bombs started falling. And then they told us that it was guaranteed that there would be nearby blasts as the Russians would be targeting Oak Ridge TN (where we made plutonium) and we were in the blast zone. We also had drills where we went to the lowest floor in the school, got under tables, and assumed the position to kiss our ass good-bye. Talk about fucking with Jane or Johnny's mind.

But it's funny, we grew up in this environment where the "ruskies" were going to nuke us into oblivion at any moment, and we played "shoot um' up" with cap pistols, and had bb guns, 22 rifles, and even took them to school, and still haven't shot a single person.

You can sure tell how things have changed when you watch the movie Red dawn and the high school kids had guns in the back of their pickup trucks.
