You know what would really be funny ?
If someone at the marketing department from AMD predicted this would happen and used the ram chips shortage for the 4GB models in their advantage. Now, there is going to be an even bigger run on the RX 480. :)

Just sit back and enjoy the ride...

8gb card for $200. Not bad. When the voltage and heat goes down with the update the gpu will be an even better value.

Will be interesting if this continues with AIB non-reference cards. My hunch would be no.

While this is great for the consumer, it doesnt bode well for AMD's bottom line. It's kind of the same old story with AMD isnt it?

If you're savvy enough to do this flashing than undervolting on your own shouldn't be a problem, It's pretty easy.

It sounds like you can manually adjust the card to do what the update should by using their software (I still can't believe they called it WattMan) to reduce the voltage. The funny part is that people are reporting getting better results (only about 4% tops on some benches) when they undervolt.

Reminds me of the forum blitz-marketing to push dual/tri-core AMD CPUs that unlocked to tri/quad cores!

AMD better make the 4GB disappear, because it's just asking to lose money if people start flashing em.

I recall some posters here saying the miner's would gobble them up. The used market is going to be an interesting thing in a few months/years.

I'm tempted to pick one up. That's one heck of a deal. Reminds me of the soft-mod I used to change my 9500 to a 9700. :)

This reminds me of my 6950's flashed to 6970's for the added shaders. I think the added VRAM is better.

That's a much bigger benefit though, since you were getting 2X as many pixel pipelines.

8GB 480's are hard enough to find at MSRP, 4GB ones are nowhere to be found ATM. This news will make it even harder to find one.

Accidental viral marketing engaged!

GJ AMD!

$199 USD for a card that on par with the 390 that uses half the power and will likely improve more with driver updates.

I know this would hurt but AMD should just lower the price to $199 for *all* reference models and call it day. This would really force to Nvidia to cut margins on their 1060's.

This is unfortunate in the sense that it means we are unlikely to actually have a 4gb version. Because at $199 the 480 is a steal. At $260 or whatever a non-reference 8gb version comes in at it likely won't be 30% faster. We have seen hardly any difference in benchmarks between the 4gb and 8gb versions.

Yes 8GB is basically unnecessary but a nice to have. 4GB is plenty for 1080P/60 (where this card shines) and likely will be for the life the card.

They probably are all 8GB. Because 4GB * 8 chips are EOL last I checked, it's 8GB for 8 chips these days being mass produced.

Also this:

Even the packaging for 4GB edition is rare! lol

Now I feel buyer's remorse. RX 480 4GB are only $319 AUD here, the 8GB are $379. :(

I haven't been keeping up, I thought the 8GB card's memory was also clocked higher? I agree with most that the additional 4GB of memory isn't likely to have much of an affect in performance for a card targeted at 1080p (if clocked the same), but something most that are stating that are forgetting is a good number of newer games are limiting your settings if they don't detect "X" amount of ram. This could be a good reason to pay the additional money for the 8GB cards or go the 8GB unlocking route.

Haha. Yeah you know this was a last minute decision by AMD. I wonder what the ratio was, probably something like 10:1 (8GB vs 4GB) released.
